Known Causes of Panic Attacks

Have you ever experienced a panic attack?  Have you ever felt that you’re about to die really soon and intensely feel a need to shout, run or cry?  Or have you felt so disoriented that you had difficulty breathing and you feel your heart pounding intensely?  Do you sometimes feel that you’re going crazy?  If yes, you might have had a panic attack.  While the symptoms of it both emotional and physical may be easy to pinpoint and describe, experts have yet to determine the exact triggers and causes of panic attacks.

A panic attack is an episode that usually involves extreme anxiety accompanied by physical panic signs and symptoms such as crying, heavy breathing, dizziness, nausea, heart palpitation, excessive sweating, numbness, hot or cold flashes and many others.  A panic or an anxiety attack may be set off by a lot of indefinite things and situations including those that are unavoidable and no one may have control over.

Some health problems are also causes of panic attack.   Hyperthyroidism, hypoglycaemia, tapeworm, cardiac problems, Wilson’s disease and other physical medical conditions are also related to as triggers of panic attacks.  In cases like these, medical attention should be given to the person as these can lead to more serious problems.

However, medical experts offer some explanation regarding some cases of panic attacks which involves the use of certain medications and food which are found to be incompatible to the condition and may contribute to the onset of panic attack.  These are also considered known causes of panic attack. Stimulants like Caffeine, alcohol, nicotine and illicit drugs should be avoided to reduce the risk of panic attacks.  In a lot of cases, withdrawal from certain medications, also help trigger panic attack. Medications that have side effects that involve the symptoms of panic attack should also be assessed before use.  

Activities that may induce stress should also be avoided.  If you work in a stressful environment it will be good to have some form of regular relaxation and outlet.  This will help you manage the stress level so as not to trigger panic episodes in the future.

Treating Panic Attack and Anxiety

For a person who suffers from panic and anxiety disorder, it may be hard to lead a perfectly normal life. More often than not, the onset of panic attacks is unavoidable and may set off the person at any time. The therapy includes a series of sessions and exercises that deliberately asks you to panic. You may be asked to hyperventilate, think of the things you fear most, and stimulate you to recreate your episodes. Its purpose is for the practitioner to assess the situation more accurately and for you to be able to take control of the situation.
